Type of Sarcoma: Leiomyosarcoma
Mary Elizabeth Spetzman was born on January 28, 1956 in Monticello, Minnesota and grew up in Ironton, Minnesota. Mary proudly spoke about growing up in the community near the Cayuna Iron Range. She graduated from Crosby Ironton High School in 1974. Mary continued her education at multiple colleges and universities with focus on religious and wildlife studies.
Mary married the love of her life Jerome (Jerry) Spetzman on October 14, 1995. They raised their family in a beautiful home on Kroon Lake near Lindstrom, Minnesota. Mary had a deep commitment to family. She and Jerry were blessed with children: Krystal Spetzman, Makayla (Nicholas) Otis, and Abigail Spetzman. Grandchildren: Eithan, Dana, Sullivan, Cheyenne, William and Alanna.
Mary was so beautiful inside and out. Her laughter was so joyful and her smile was contagious. Mary carried music in her heart. Mary enjoyed reading, playing the piano, gardening, bird watching, boating, her morning cup of coffee and a good steak. She was well-read and knowledgeable about many things and was always willing to try new adventures. Mary and Jerry traveled throughout the United States along with visits to Mexico and Canada. They had the opportunity to visit Peru and Russia on short term mission trips. They enjoyed many summers at Wilderness of Minnesota family campground near Mille Lacs Lake. Mary escaped Minnesota winters by spending time in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
Mary held fast to her faith in Jesus Christ who was her guide during good times and bad. Mary was a strong woman of faith with a servant’s heart for the welfare of others. She demonstrated her strong faith and truly forgave those who may have caused her pain. She was an awesome role model of a “Godly” woman. In the end, Mary’s body could not withstand the ravages of the very rare Leiomyosarcoma cancer. Mary passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on November 25, 2023.
